Silene vulgaris
Domestic carnation plant with characteristic inflated calyx tube and white to pale pink flowers.
The bladder campion, also known as common campion or puffball campion, is an undemanding, perennial herbaceous plant that thrives particularly well in somewhat drier, sandy or stony locations. This winter-hardy carnation plant owes its name to its characteristic inflated calyx tubes, which resemble a bird's crop. Although the flowers are open all day, they only release their pleasant scent in the evening hours, attracting many moths. The leaves and other parts of the plant also play an essential role in the life cycle of various moth species. Thanks to its pretty flowers, the plant is a decorative addition to rockeries and wildflower gardens, but it also looks stunning in bouquets.
