Cucumis sativus ssp. sikkimensis
.Very robust variety from north-east India with cylindrical, crunchy fruits weighing approx. 500 g.
This historic cucumber from the Indian state of Sikkim forms many fruits in the open field, which ripen from green to yellow to dark brown and have a netted skin at the end. As a salad cucumber, the fruits should be harvested young. In India, the cucumbers are also used for quick stir-fry dishes. When ripe, the cucumber-like, slightly sweet flavour is even more pronounced. The botanist Sir Joseph Hooker is said to have been the first European to propagate the species in 1848.
