Diplotaxis erucoides
.The leaves of this variety of rocket have a pungent horseradish or wasabi flavour.
The plants are widespread in southern Europe and sometimes also occur wild in southern Germany. They prefer moist, nutrient-rich soil. When harvested in progress, the leaves remain beautifully tender. The leaves taste excellent on a sandwich or, as in Italy, briefly fried with oil and garlic and tomatoes. The plants are annuals but can reseed themselves if allowed to flower off.
